Accessory Designer of the Year 2016

Monica Mauro is Contenders for Accessory Designer of the Year 2016

Monica Mauro is mentioned in this article: “Phoenix Fashion Week continues to grow in scope and stature” on Examier.com.

In 2006, Brian Hill, a St. Louis native, who graduated with an ASU degree in real estate and marketing, had a dream. Coming from a fashion design family, having experimented with selling tee shirts and ball caps, and having visited the New York Fashion Week, Hill was inspired to start Phoenix Fashion Week. What started out as a one-day event, is now a year-long series of fashion business events and activities for designers, models and thousands of fashionistas. On June 9, the 2016 kick-off was the Emerging Designer and Model Launch Party, which was held at LIVEWIRE in Scottsdale, Arizona.

This year, there are 12 vying for Emerging Designer of the Year. There are designers from several states, and as far away as Capetown, South Africa, and the Cayman Islands. Hill’s goal is to “Push Arizona Forward.” Some of that involves identifying, training and nurturing local designers. So five of the competitors (Aconav, Dinezhoon, Forgiven Love, Laura Tanzer, and Shelby Healy) are from Arizona. In addition, Arizonans (Monica Mauro, and Rhinestones and Relics) are two of the three contenders for Accessory Designer of the Year 2016.

Dri Creatore, a beginning designer who just moved from San Francisco, was in the audience on June 9. His thrill is in creating unconventional designs. “I like to evoke emotions and do it my way.” He enjoyed watching the creations that were previewed on the runway at LIVEWIRE.

On June 4, there had been been a Model of the Year Search at the Phoenix Premium Outlets. The top 40 models from that competition also got to walk down the runway at Livewire. Deividas and Cierra won the Headshot competition. During the next four months, they, and the other models and designers will enjoy modeling lessons, make-overs and business education, before Phoenix Fashion Week on October 13-15.

Also watching, on Thursday was model Julia Chaves’ family, who live in Scottsdale. Her father, Jeff Chaves said, “We are glad to see her having so much fun.” Chaves is only 15; so he is also happy about the safe developmental environment provided by Phoenix Fashion Week.

Hill’s business expertise and emphasis on “Fashion, Education and Community” make the Phoenix Fashion Week unique and have attracted major sponsors and generated respect for Arizona’s fashion industry; it is an evolving economic engine and tourist attraction for Arizona.
